Amba
The Divine Story
Mata Amba, revered in the Devi Mahatmya as 'Ya Devi Sarva-bhuteshu Shakti-rupena samsthita' (the goddess who resides in all beings as power), embodies Aadishakti. The Lalita Sahasranama glorifies her as 'Brahma-vidya' - the supreme knowledge.
First Manifestation
As Aadishakti, she exists from the beginning of creation. Her first earthly manifestation was as Sati, daughter of Daksha, as described in the Shiva Purana, later reincarnating as Parvati.
Divine Purpose
To embody the cosmic feminine energy (Shakti), protect dharma by destroying evil forces, nurture creation as the Divine Mother, and awaken spiritual consciousness in devotees through compassion and strength.
Spiritual Significance
In the Soundarya Lahari, Adi Shankaracharya praises her as 'Shiva-Shakti-aikya-rupini' - the unified form of consciousness and energy. She is 'Jagat-janani' (mother of the world) and 'Mahishasura-mardini' (destroyer of evil).
